Spring Organization

"Spring: a lovely reminder of how beautiful change can truly be"

Isn't that the truth? In many regions, flowers are blooming and animals are emerging from the cold to begin a new year. Especially in Ohio, where we are, Spring just feels exciting and energized.

Think of Your Future Self
Are you planning a special gathering this year? Looking forward to summer and being gone more? Think about how you want to live your life this year. Maybe less IS more so that you can spend more time with family and friends or traveling. If planning a graduation party or birthday celebration or general gathering, how do you see your home in this situation. These events might be a reality check that you may want to do some updating... Some decluttering... And some changes to make your home more functional.

One Room at a Time
Start with one room at a time. Start with the surfaces of furniture, item by item.... Do these things you have on display bring you happiness? Do you have a spot that seems to collect items, paper, toys?... Identify these areas and then find homes for everything that should not be there. One tip I give to clients is that they can certainly have one drop zone but have a plan. Place it in a decorative basket or box but go through it every few days and make decisions on the items. Work through the zones of the room... For instance in a bedroom... Start with furniture tops, then go through dressers, then closet, etc. Set enough time (3-4 hours) to get through the entire space.

Special Projects
Spring is the time to take a look at how the house is currently functioning. With kids or just as life changes with jobs and hobbies, so does the house. Take the time to figure out how things might work better with the coming year. This may include updates on furniture to better store items, zoning out closets for better function, or even the rooms may change from a bedroom to a crafting/hobby room. Change is good though. You are creating the life you want to live.

Don't Forget Your Outside Spaces
Yes, the garage may need a quick reorganization to prep for your outdoor activities, yardwork, gardening, and upcoming outings. Does everything have a home? Do you need to install a better system to get more items off the floor?  All things to think about and tackle early in spring. What about your patios, decks, pool houses, and sheds? Just like your home, these spaces need to function and have a system.

Organizing each Spring can make the world of difference in your home. Take notes, set some goals and just start! If feeling overwhelmed, invite a friend or family member over or even hire an organizer. The professional organizer can help you accomplish a lot in a very short time with the sessions that are scheduled in 3-4 hour increments. Spring is coming along with an amazing year ahead.
